The origin of this parish is uncertain, but have people that say that the name comes from the Santo António or D.Maria I that has been concerned by the hunger problems in Porto Santo where built houses in Santo António da Serra to those who wanted to leave Porto Santo.

Although, the habitants in Santo da Serra don`t stayed too much time in this parish because of the different temperature. They have left Santo da Serra in 1783.

Because of his atmospheric conditions and the huge abundance of trees, the parish doesn`t been explored in agriculture in the first year.

There built one or two chapels. One of them was been transformed in the parish church and been refurbished and blessed in 1857.

The parish was an important center of Protestantism, published by the Scottish doctor Roberto Kalley,  that take some religious discussions because of his capacity for speaker and the generosity how he treat the patients. This way he won the population.

Some people say that the occupation of this parish just started in the XVI century, because the movement of population had been bigger in the coast.
