The island of Porto Santo is one of the Madeira Archipelago. It is situated at a distance of 50 Km from Madeira. The “Golden Island”, as it is also known, measures 11 Km lenght and 6 km in width. It was discovered in 1418 by João Gonçalves Zarco, Tristão Vaz Teixeira and Bartolomeu Perestrelo. According to history, it was given this name as it had provided a port of shelter from a bad storm.
Porto Santo boasts long beaches of fine yellow sand known for therapeutic properties, and its calm blue sea warm temperatures of between 18º C and 22º C. The local climate is stable and dry, temperatures not varying much between the seasons, which makes this a very pleasant place to go to the beach all year round.
ABesides this magnificent and relaxing 9 km stretch of beach, the visitor will be able to choose from a variety of water sports: horseback riding, golf, walks along footh paths, enjoying the island?s arid landscapes and taking advantage of the climate and the true hospitality of the local population.
