The defence of the Archipelago of Madeira has always been a constant concern for both kings and captains of the island.

In Ribeira Brava city centre, there is a Fort called Forte de São Bento.

In 1803, many of the forts situated in the village were destroyed, due to the great floods. The only on remaining was São Bento Fort.

In 1906, this fort has been restored. Nowadays it is the place of the tourist office.
